  19. I thought of one more addition to this text  and I decided it was worth adding.
  20. I wanted to visit
  21. the Hackersclub Library, but the proxy at the same site that inspired me to
  22. write the first part
  23. of this text wouldn't let me visit 'www.hackersclub.com', so I went to
  24. 'hackersclub.com'(no 'www.')
  25. and I managed to visit the site, unfettered by the fickle proxy, with the idea
  26. below.

  28. As you can see, the banned name has a 'www' in it and the non-banned name is
  29. just the domain -- no
  30. 'www' involved. Think about 'www.hackersclub.com'. The 'www' machine is simply a
  31. subdomain of
  32. 'hackersclub.com'. So, leave the 'www' out! What I imagine many sysadmins do is
  33. ban the 'www.'
  34. section of a given domain and not ban the whole domain. Banning one subdomain
  35. (the 'www' subdomain)
  36. will *still leave the main domain and other non-banned subdomains able to be
  37. contacted!*

  39. In fact, you can connect to most websites with just the domain, no 'www.'
  40. needed, For example, to
  41. visit the AltaVista search engine I could visit 'altavista.com' instead of
  42. 'www.altavista.com'.

  44. Both 'www.hackersclub.com' and 'hackersclub.com' resolve to the same IP --
  45. 199.227.88.143. So if 
  46. 'hackersclub.com' is let through and 'www.hackersclub.com' is not let through,
  47. then it is a good
  48. bet that the proxy bans names, and does not resolve IPs and ban the IPs (since
  49. the IPs are the same.
  50. Knowing that fact might come in handy later...)
